The idea for Father's Day came from a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. Dodd was one of six children, and she grew up watching her single father raise her and her siblings on his own.

She was inspired by the work her father did, and she wanted to find a way to honor him.

So, in 1910, Dodd proposed the idea of Father's Day to several churches in Spokane, Washington.

The churches liked the idea, and they agreed to start celebrating Father's Day on June 19th, which happened to be Dodd's father's birthday.
